Granite Countertops 101
Is a kitchen upgrade on your to do list? If so, you will want to pay special attention to the countertops you choose. First, consider what your countertops will be used for and how much time you spend in the kitchen. Are you looking for quality and durability, or are you more into appearance and lasting ware? Granite counter tops should be carefully considered as they meet the requirements mentioned so far!
Basically, granite is a rock. It’s part of the earth’s crust and formed of crystals. In using granite, you may feel a bit more “green” as though you are doing your part to recycle and conserve. It’s a beautiful stone that will outlast the use you have for it.
Granite is rated in different grades based on its amount of calcite in the stone. The less calcite present, the higher the grade. Calcite reacts to acids. An issue that is usually addressed with a high quality sealer, the same applies to granite that is highly permeable. Most likely the lighter the granite shade a sealer will be needed.
Pick up your samples and take them home to perform these simple tests yourself. Dust off your sample and apply 5 drops of lemon juice on upright side of the granite countertop and wait 5 minutes. Observe the areas in which you applied the drops. If they appear to be darkening, you will need to seal your countertop, to protect it from spillage.
The actual cost of a granite countertop can vary. The cheapest you can go is a do it yourself project in which you purchase granite floor tile and glue them to your countertop. Though this can be a wonderful look, seams will be present and may grow old after awhile. You may want to consider purchasing modular pieces of your favorite granite countertop, eliminating so many seams and is put down with adhesive.
The end result looks more professional. The high end solution is hiring a remodeling company to cut the granite and install it for you quickly and beautifully.
